History:

Kraken is a Ukrainian volunteer military formation formed on February 24, 2022, the day of Russia's invasion of Ukraine. The battalion was formed from veterans of the regiment and during the fighting successfully regained control over several settlements previously occupied by Russian troops, becoming one of the most famous volunteer armed formations. The Kraken has also been the subject of controversy over the recruitment of fighters from far-right groups; the unit's fighters dismiss the claim as Russian propaganda.

Unit commanders acknowledged that there may be far-right members in the regiment, but said that there were fewer such people than a motley group with the intention of defending Ukraine. The regiment is also accused of mistreating Russian prisoners of war, which the regiment itself denies. Kraken is not officially part of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, but is subordinate to the Ministry of Defense.
